Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbai Dobaara ! Movie Review

Music: Pritam
Lyrics: Rajat Aroraa
Music label: T-Series

Expectations:

The musical expectation is very high from this sequel to the melody-rich Milan Luthria-Pritam collaboration Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai (OUATIM). Moreover, Luthria is a filmmaker with a heritage of memorable musicals like Kachche Dhaage, Chori Chori and even The Dirty Picture.

As for Pritam, he's on a roll after Barfi!, Race 2 and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and we expect that merit.

Music:

The soundtrack has only four songs but nevertheless emerges as one of the better albums of this year. Let us begin with the finest track, the energetic 'Tu Hi Khwahish', rendered with superb zing by Sunidhi Chauhan. Clearly the counterpart of 'Parda' from the prequel (which was a number derived in part from two classics), it is a super club song that is a hark back to such tracks from Prakash Mehra and Feroz Khan with Kalyanji-Anandji, laced with some vocal and orchestral nuances reminding us of R.D. Burman!

The beauty is that this is still a completely original track with some intense romantic lyrics by Rajat Aroraa (Tu hi khwahish / Tu hi khatra / Zeher tera dil mein utra). The arrangements are richly acoustic, and the production so harmonious that at no point does the song jar on the ears despite Sunidhi's sustained high pitch.

And if the '70s is the timeframe of the film, and K-A and RD are there, can the then-market-leaders Laxmikant-Pyarelal be left behind? L-P's latest in a long chain of re-creations is 'Tayyab Ali', whose re-creation is credited to Pritam's assistant Anupam Amod but seems clearly like his own handiwork. Smartly adapted with some really witty lyrics (Rajat Aroraa adds his bit to the Anand Bakshi's irreverent verse in the original film, Amar Akbar Anthony), the song is sung by Javed Ali with fair panache, and odiously unfair comparisons to Mohammed Rafi are best avoided!

What sets 'Tayyab Ali' apart from the standard re-creations nowadays is a near-identical situation to the original song, and the imaginative contemporary tenor. Pritam replicates the old orchestration only to a basic extent, keeping the choral patterns different too.

The third ace of the score is 'Yeh Tune Kya Kiya', sung with full-throated expertise by Javed Bashir, heard recently also in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Lyrically, this is the finest song on the score, and clearly the corresponding number to the Sufi delight in the older film in the OUATIM franchise, 'Tum Jo Aaye Zindagi Mein'.

This time, it is a more intricate composition, also given a Sufi-rock treatment, and it even tributes the older number by skillfully working in a musical segment recalling that song! The play of strings in the interlude boosts up the soulful quotient.

Pritam can always be relied upon to be a tuneful bridge between the best of the melodious past and today's music and Bashir's harkatein as he sings the line Ishq ki….baaziyaan shows how the composer adheres to deep melody like few of his contemporaries do. The phonetics of this track is immaculate, structured to spice up the aural appeal of the melody.

A comparatively weaker song is 'Chugliyaan' (Javed Ali-Sahir Ali Bagga), which sounds too calculated both in music and lyrics, thus ending up as an average but stereotyped number. The hook (Mera yaar yaar mujh mein / Mera pyaar pyaar tujh mein) lacks the power to linger in memory. No, it is not a bad song, but it is one of those familiar grooves that we have heard ad infinitum from lesser composers.

Overall:

The high-profile film should hopefully boost the musical prospects. One hopes that the filming of the song within the movie helps too.

Our Picks

Yeh Tune Kya Kiya, Tayyab Ali, Tu Hi Khwahish

 Luv U Soniyo Movie Review

Released On: 26 Jul 2013
Directed By: Joe Rajan
Starring: Tanuj Virwani, Neha Hinge, Howard Rosemeyer, Bunty Grewal, Avtar Gill, Suresh Menon, Joy Fernandes, Puneet Issar, Farida Dadi, Himani Shivpuri, Viveck Vaswani, Amaan Khan, Shaan

Bollywood continues to borrow from films of yore. We rehash love stories tirelessly, refurbishing the age-old premise to suit the present-day spectators. LUV U SONIYO, directed by Joe Rajan, too follows the same routine we are so accustomed to witnessing.

LUV U SONIYO is about Mark [Tanuj Virmani] and Soniyo [Neha Hinge], who, since their childhood, have been brought together by fate, time after time, only to be drawn apart each time. But destiny has its own plans for these two, who belong to two completely different worlds.

LUV U SONIYO is an amalgamation of loosely knitted episodes with the usual monotony of mush that is broken by the few light moments, which come as a welcome respite. There's not much of drama here. Nor does it have moments that make you pine for the lovers. The culmination, therefore, doesn't give you the feeling of euphoria. Besides, the overtone of Goan culture seems a bit over the top here.

Director Joe Rajan knows the technicalities right, but he is saddled with an unenergetic script. A couple of songs are tuneful though.

Tanuj is strictly okay. Neha seems like just any other plain Jane. The supporting cast comprising of Puneet Issar, Avtar Gill, Joy Fernandes, Bunty Grewal, Himani Shivpuri and Viveck Vaswani are functional. Howard Rosemeyer irritates after a point.

On the whole, LUV U SONIYO is yet another addition to the old-school romantic film!

 Issaq Movie Review

Released On: 26 Jul 2013
Directed By: Manish Tiwary
Starring: Prateik Babbar, Amyra Dastur, Ravi Kissen, Rajeshwari Sachdev, Makrand Deshpande, Neena Gupta, Prashant Narayanan, Sudhir Pandey, Prashant Kumar, Amit Sial, Vineet Kumar Singh, Yogesh Suri, Malini Awasthy
They say a 'rose by any other name remains a rose'. Likewise, William Shakespeare's timeless classic 'Romeo and Juliet' by any other name will always arouse tremendous curiosity. The tragedy of two young, star-crossed lovers has always provided fodder to many films [Bollywood/Hollywood]. As a matter of fact, there have been many adaptations and inspirations of this eternal love story. Director Manish Tiwary's ISSAQ is no different. He has tried to illustrate the innocence of romance against the backdrop of violence and hatred.

Shakespeare or no Shakespeare, films like QAYAMAT SE QAYAMAT TAK and the much recent ISHAQZAADE are examples of love blooming between the offspring of two warring families. On his own admission, Manish claims his ISSAQ to be an adaptation of 'Romeo & Juliet'. He does succeed in bringing out the essence of the love story that is set against the backdrop of the sand mafia and the dreaded Naxalites, but the film appeals in bits and spurts, not in entirety!

The story is set in Banaras and its neigbouring areas that are witness to violence unleashed by sand mafia controlled by two warring factions -- Mishras and Kashyaps. Kashyap has an 18-year old, pretty daughter Bachchi [Amyra Dastur] from his first wife, while Mishra's son Rahul [Prateik] is a good-looking teenager with predictable interests for a boy of his background -- girls and guns. Things change when Rahul and Bachchi fall in love. Disregarding the consequences, the young lovers choose to go ahead with the diktats of their hearts…

ISSAQ banks heavily on guns and violence, as is the demand of the script. Even though the screenplay tilts towards the blooming romance of the lovebirds, it's actually the gun-yielding men and the scheming woman [aptly played by Rajeshwari Sachdeva], who tend to leave an everlasting impact.

What is good about not just the film but also Bollywood is the fact that rather than investing heavily on foreign locales, it has now started discovering the stunning locales within India itself. Besides Delhi, Wai and other locales, Banaras seems to have caught the fancy of our storytellers, with films like RAANJHANAA, YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA-2 [partly], besides several others, being filmed in this vibrant city. Even in ISSAQ, the locations and the camerawork is something that stays with you much after the film has concluded.

Even though the territory of the script is known to all, it's the screenplay that keeps the film moving frame by frame. The narrative does get lengthy and stretched at times, courtesy the loose editing at places. Had the editing been crisper, it would have left an indelible impression for sure. While the first half of the film is slow moving and uneven, the post-interval portions are a bit stretched. In fact, the film gathers momentum only after the attacks on Amit Sial and Ravi Kishan. The soundtrack is commonplace, with the title track leaving an impression.

Of the cast, Prateik isn't entirely persuasive. A bit more conviction would've only made a vast difference to his performance. Although this is Amyra's debut film, she shows immense promise. A few right films and she could just be the face/name to watch out for. The director has truly succeeded to extract the maximum out of her facial innocence. Amongst the rest of the cast, while Neena Gupta is just about okay, it is Ravi Kishan [terrific], Prashant Narayan [convincing], Makrand Deshpande [super], Sudhir Pandey [competent], Vineet Kumar Singh [perfect], Prashant Kumar [proficient] and Amit Sial [first-rate] who stand out. Rajeshwari Sachdeva is top notch.

On the whole, ISSAQ is absorbing and convincing in parts, not in entirety. The final outcome could've been even more impactful had it not been stretched.

Issaq Tera song lyrics

Kuch Reshmi Hai
Kuch Khurdura Hai
Abhi Beh Chala Hai
Abhi Hai Rukka
Hath Mein Hai Raith Sa
Issaq Tera

Uss Paar Tu Hai
Iss Paar Main
Lagta Hai Dooboonga Iss Baar Mein
Jaane Kaha Hai Le Chala
Issaq Tera
O Saare Jaha Se Hai Juda

Issaq Tera
OooooooOoOoO

Tu Mere Main Tere
Samne Jab Talak
Yeh Zameen Yeh Palak
Khoobsurat Lage
Kisht Mein Hai Mili
Aaj Ki Yeh Khushi
Gin Rake Hai Magar
Kal Ke Lamhe Sabhi
Kuch Der Tujhko Bhi

Palkon Ki Taaron Main
Rakh Loonga Main

Issaq Tera
O Hath Mein Hai Raith Sa

Issaq Tera
Uss Paar Tu Hai

Iss Paar Main
Lagta Dooboonga Iss Baar Mein
Jaane Kaha Hai Le Chala

Issaq Tera
O Saare Jahan Se Hai Juda

KASHMIR MAIN TU KANYAKUMARI

Chipak-Chapak Ke Chalti Hain
Kabhi Kabhi Do Raahein
Jude-Jude Kuch Aise Ki Laga Ho Jaise Gum
Double-Double Hoti Thi Jo Kabhi-Kabhi Taqleefein
Kisi Ke Sang Mein Chalne Se Hui Half Se Kum
Ho Tera-Mera, Mera-Tera
Tera-Mera, Mera-Tera Qissa Atrangi
Kabhi-Kabhi Chalti Hai
Kabhi-Kabhi Rukti Kahani Bedhangi

Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari
North-South Ki Kat Gayi Dekho Doori Hi Saari
Kashmir Tu Main Kanyakumari
Fifty-Fifty Har Situation Mein Hissedari

Ek Taraf To Jhagda Hai, Saath Phir Bhi Tagda Hai
Do Kadam Chalte Hain To Lagta Hai Aath Hain
Do Tarah Ke Flavour, Sau Tarah Ke Tevar
Dar-Badar Firtein Hain Ji Phir Bhi Apni Thaath Hai

Kabhi-Kabhi Chale Seedhe, Kabhi Mud Jaayein
Kabhi-Kabhi Kahin Tootein, Kahin Jud Jaayein
Hum Sham-Sahar Ke
Chaaron Pahar Ke
Mood Mein Dhal Jaayein

Kashmir Main, Tu Kanyakumari
Uttar Ne Dakshin Ko Aflatoon Aankh Maari
Kashmir Tu, Main Kanyakumari
Tel Bechne Jaaye Toh Phir Yeh Duniya Saari
Hey Hey…

Main Zara Sa Puncture To Tu Hawa Ke Jaisi Hai
Sath Ho To Pahiye Taqdeeron Ke Tight Ho
Bulb Ban Jaaun Main Aur Tu Switch Ban Jaa
Bhaad Mein Jaaye Duniya Apni Batti Light Ho

Kabhi-Kabhi Chale Seedhe Kabhi Mud Jaayein
Kabhi-Kabhi Paidal Kabhi Ud Jaayein
Humein Dekh Zamane Walon Ki Chaahe Naak Sikud Jaye

Kashmir Main, Tu Kanyakumari
Halke-Fulke Packet Mein Dekho Mushqil Bhari
Kashmir Tu, Main Kanyakumari
Hindi Mein Gustakhi Hai To English Mein Sorry

Chipak-Chapak Ke Chalti Hain
Kabhi Kabhi Do Raahein
Jude-Jude Kuch Aise Ki Laga Ho Jaise Gum
Double-Double Hoti Thi Jo Kabhi-Kabhi Taqleefein
Kisi Ke Sang Mein Chalne Se Hui Half Se Kum
Ho Tera-Mera, Mera-Tera
Tera-Mera, Mera-Tera Qissa Atrangi

Get on the train baby!

Masla ho simple ya phir complex
Kuch ho panga na ho depress
Khud se hi hain hum bade impress
Ki apni fitrat hai happiness
Problem se peecha chhudane ka,
Yehi tareeka hai yaroon, yehi hai process

Ticket khareed ke
Beth ja seat pe
Nikal na jaaye kahin Chennai Express! (x2)

Chennai... ai.. ai.. ai...
Chennai Express! (x2)

Get on the train baby...

What a wonderful, badi bombastic
Life ki journey hai fully fantastic
Jitni bhi log aaye
Unke liye banaye
Dil mein jagah hum, dil hai elastic

Language alag hai, alag hai dress
Dekho parantu hai ye hai careless
Co-incidental hai, thodi si mental hai
Phir bhi kahaani hui hai progress

Ticket khareed ke
Beth ja seat pe
Nikal na jaaye kahin Chennai Express! (x2)

Chennai... ai.. ai.. ai... Chennai Express! -x2
Get on the train baby...

Jeevan hai (you know) khushiyon ka (yay yay)
Nanha sa collection (it's true)
Takraaye - sometimes
Anjaana hai Rab ka selection
Got it?

Love jiske paas ho usko kya khaakh ho
Gham ki allergy ka ulta reaction, ulta reaction
Jitni samasya ho jitna mess
Hal mill hi jaayega more or less
Problem se peecha chhudane ka,
Yehi tareeka hai yaroon, yehi hai process

Ticket khareed ke
Beth ja seat pe
Nikal na jaaye kahin Chennai Express! (x2)

Chennai... ai.. ai.. ai... Chennai Express! (x2)
